US Out of EU

We were talking yesterday to an expert on European Union expansion to Eastern Europe, Nat Copsey (who happened to be sleeping on our floor), and he raised an interesting point about the way American congressional districts are drawn.

Were the United States to apply for membership in the European Union, he told us, we would apparently get the polite reply that (aside from not being European, and being hated) we would be barred from membership under the Treaty of Nice’s requirement of “fully democratic institutions.”

Gerrymandered congressional districts, apparently, aren’t “fully democratic” by European standards. Or, come to think of it, any other standards.
