Ah, St. Tammany’s Day. And Doug Kellner, a Democratic commissioner of the Board of Elections (natch), remembers.
“May 12 is the day assigned for celebrating the Feast of St. Tammany, the mythic hero and patron saint of the Democratic-Republicans who eventually formed the Democratic Party,” he writes, before lamenting the decline and fall of Tammany Hall. “May 12 is still a day to remember the tremendous success of our party. We can remember the parades and bonfires that marked American democracy and the spirit of working class people joining together to form a government.”
He recommends this Tammany history site.
