One astute Politicker reader suggests:
“Isn’t Pataki’s departure a boon to Rudy? With Pataki out, he cannot control the state delegation and, in an every man for himself environment, Rudy has a better shot at winning the delegation. Also, as a lame duck, can Pataki even control the GOP NYC Convention in 2006?”
That remains to be seen. Meanwhile, pols have lined up to pay their respects to the Governor, including House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL), who won the speedy condolences race with a press release issued at 12:34 p.m.
Sayeth the Speaker: “George Pataki is a true public servant, and while he is leaving the Governor’s Mansion, I am confident he has a bright future in the Republican Party.”
