Unfortunately for Freddy, that’s Political Wire’s headline on a story out of St. Paul, Minnesota, where Democratic Mayor Randy Kelly’s enthusiastic, surprising endorsement of George W. Bush last year is one of the key factors that has him down, yes, 41 percentage points to a challenger.
Why so different? One guess is that New Yorkers realize that, at some level, Mike’s faking his Republicanism and was forcing his enthusiasm for the President; Kelly, a Democrat, was clearly for real.
Mike is rewarded for his insincerity by voters who feel that, deep down, he agrees with them; Kelly is punished for showing his actual, unpopular allegiance. So much for the virtues of straight talk.
