There was a gospel flavor to the scene this evening at 125 Barclay Street, where Mike led a “get out the vote” rally for District Council 37, the city’s largest public employee union. The union members jumped out of their seats, waved green and white pompoms and exploded with applause when Mike entered the room to the lyrics and beats of Love Train.
And Mike quickly caught the spirit.
“Is there love in the house?” he called out from the podium. He referred to the union members as the “Brothers and Sisters of DC 13” before attacking Freddy with “Together we can count on independent leadership that does not waiver in the wind and change its mind.”
Can I get an Amen?
The union’s executive director, Lillian Roberts, had welcomed Mike to the stage by noting “We need him more than he needs us. He can get his own houses and all that.”
