WOOD WAR XIV

Who’s winning the battle of the front pages?

The Post does what it ought to do, going big and bold and a little nutso with the mayor’s colossal victory. But making someone into King Kong has always been trickier than it sounds. Here, the art department got sloppy: Where the original Kong poster featured the giant ape squarely facing the viewer, the Post‘s Bloomberg head is turned slightly but decisively to his left. What, nobody ever snapped a picture where the guy was looking at the camera dead on? Maybe there aren’t a lot of photos of the mayor of New York to choose from? Add in the insufficiently reconciled contrast values–and the fact that “MIKE” reads nothing like “KONG”–and you get…a floating cutout Bloomberg head.

The Daily News plays it straight, if a little preachy in the subhead. Mainly, it nails the whole story in the wood.
