Randi’s Role

An unremarked player in Chris Quinn‘s ascent was teachers’ union chief Randi Weingarten, the only labor leader (I think) seated in the VIP section at Quinn’s election.

Her support for Chris denied Quinn’s rival, Bill de Blasio, the ability to portray himself as the candidate of a united labor front, among other factors.

But here’s an interesting twist: Weingarten also tried to get de Blasio a consolation prize. He had been her choice to head the Education Committee — which Eva Moskowitz had turned into an important platform for criticizing the union.

But Randi didn’t succeed in giving the job to de Blasio, and the post, insiders say, is now almost certainly going to another reliable union ally, Robert Jackson.
