Workers in the World Trade Center lingered for as long as an hour after hearing the order to evacuate during the 2001 terrorist attacks, according to a research study underway, while safety experts once believed building occupants would only wait two minutes. The findings challenge long-held assumptions regarding “the volume of people the stairwells must accept to how long the fireproofing has to last,” the Village Voice reports.
