Science Imitating Art

Look at that S-Cargo

First came Robert Smithson’s “Floating Island,” now comes a hydroponic farm. New York Sun Works, a small nonprofit founded in 2003 by Ted Caplow (who gave New York Times readers a whole other reason to dislike “The Gates”), is making a presentation tonight before Manhattan Community Board 4’s Waterfront & Parks Committee about its proposal to float a science barge in the Hudson “featuring greenhouse-grown vegetables produced with wind and solar power.” The barge, which will use purified river water to grow the vegetables and employ all sorts of other environmental cross-subsidies, will tour the waterfront in unspecified locations from May to December. Hey, man cannot live by art alone.
