Voting Rights

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund has released a study done by the Community Service Society entitled Voting Rights in New York 1982-2006. They are calling for a the federal Voting Rights Act to be renewed and strengthened by Congress.

The report, authored by Juan Cartagena of the Community Service Society, documents in meticulous detail recent examples of voting rights violations, such as an incident in New York City where a polling site coordinator yelled, “You f—ing Chinese, there’s too many of you!” at interpreters assisting voters with translation questions.

The federal government has filed a lawsuit against New York state to modernize its voting process, giving the state until April 10th to come up with a plan.
