Ecuador, the Adidas Ad, and Internationalism

One thing the Observer left out of its soccer piece yesterday was internationalism. Soccer doesn’t just license Anglophilia; if you’re a lefty, it’s a giant third world bath. You get to pull for Africans. Thus the Cinderella of the 2006 games: Ecuador, which punished Poland and now Costa Rica. No one has scored a goal against Ecuador. Maybe they are the Brazil-killers?

Suitably, today’s game was intercut with the fabulous Adidas ad, Jose +10. Imagine: that the advertising gem of this soccer orgy is an ad all in Spanish. Throw in the United Nations’ new esteem in the wake of the U.S.-U.K.-John-Podhoretz-led Iraq debacle, and we are looking at a real internationalist moment. Ole.
