Before the weekend, I wrote that the Bronx Democratic Trustees Committee had undertaken an act of inter-borough political war by contributing money to Margarita Lopez-Torres, who is running for surrogate court against a candidate backed by the Brooklyn machine.
As it turns out, the check was never reported as an expense, according to the Bronx County’s financial filings, which are over here. No matter when checks are cashed, checks are supposed to be reported as expenditures once they are written, according to the State Board of Elections.
Also, the campaign treasurer for Margarita Lopez-Torres, Susan Loeb, called to say she “never heard” of the check before it was reported here last week.
“I don’t know anything about it,” she said.
I’m not sure what ‘s weirder here: secretly supporting an insurgent in another borough, or misreporting that secret financing.
