A Williamsburg Factory Strikes It Rich (and Miraculously Won't Become A Condo)

GMDC’s wide reach (CLICK TO EXPAND)

Crain’s reports today that the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center has racked up $4 million in grants to turn an down-and-out East Williamsburg factory into space for 25 small manufacturers. The work at 221 McKibbin Street will be done late next year, which will then create 100 jobs. The workspaces will be between 1,000 and 7,000-square-feet.

Why do projects like this matter? In an era of the neighborhood’s factory-condoization, old buildings (not to mention affordable space for local manufacturers) are under constant threat. Also, it’s not a bad way to resuscitate abandon buildings.

GMDC, our favorite non-profit of the week, has already completed five similar projects nearby–see the map–at a total of $21 million.
