Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce is threatening a lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of a Democratic plan to offer property tax cuts to homeowners based on income. The Republican leader held his press conference just one day after 24 Assembly Republicans (73% of his caucus) voted for A-1, effectively denying the Democrats to claim the GOP opposed property tax cuts as they approach the mid-term elections. Democrats are a little bit giddy over DeCroce’s move, which restores their ability to attack the GOP by claiming they are using the courts to deny seniors and middle income families an estimated $2 billion in tax relief. Last summer, after Democrats signaled that they were going to use this as an election issue, DeCroce was forced to isse a statement that backpedaled from earlier comments that the effort to cut property taxes was a “colassal waste of time.”
