Jerry Saltz Named Art Critic for New York Magazine

NEW YORK--New York magazine editor-in-chief Adam Moss announced today that Jerry Saltz will be New York magazine's new art critic. Saltz will join New York magazine's staff and begin writing reviews in April 2007.

Mark Stevens, New York's esteemed art critic for the past ten years and the Pulitzer Prize winning co-author of "DeKooning: An American Master," asked to step down from his post to begin work on a new biography, the details of which will be announced in April. Stevens will become a contributing editor for New York and will continue to write for the magazine on a variety of topics.

Jerry Saltz has been the Senior Art Critic at the Village Voice since 1998, where he was twice a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism (in 2001 and 2006) and was the recipient of the 2007 Frank Jewett Mather Award in Art Criticism from the College Art Association. A teacher at Columbia, SVA and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and frequent guest lecturer at major universities and museums, Saltz was also the sole advisor on the 1995 Whitney Biennial. Saltz has written for Frieze, Modern Painters, Parkett, Art in America, Time Out New York, Flash Art, Arts Magazine and many others.
"When Mark Stevens asked to end his ten-year reign as New York's art critic, it was hard to imagine who might fill his shoes," said Adam Moss, New York's editor-in-chief. "But when it became clear that Jerry Saltz was interested in joining our team, I felt relieved and grateful. We are lucky to have both Jerry's and Mark's voices in our pages going forward."
