Passaic County Freeholder Pasquale Lepore is in serious danger of being dumped from the Democratic organiation line, with County Chairman John Currie expected to support Sam Goow, the brother of Paterson City Councilman Aslon Goow. Currie, according to Democratic sources, has been pushing a ban on dual officeholding and Lepore has steadfastly rejected calls that he resign as Mayor of West Paterson.
If he wins, Goow, an ally of Sheriff Jerry Speziale, would become the first Arab American to serve on the Passaic County Board of Freeholders. This would come one year after Democrats offered — and then withdrew — their support of controversial businessman Sammi Merhi for Freeholder.
Lepore backers say that Currie is being selective with his enforcement of an anti-dual officeholding policy, noting that Assemblyman Gary Schaer is a Passaic City Councilman and State Senator Paul Sarlo is the Mayor of Wood-Ridge. Both are expected to run for re-election on the Passaic Democratic line.
The Democratic nomination appears to be tantemount to a General Election victory in Passaic County these days — especially since the GOP does not yet have candidates for countywide office.
