Golden Mulls a Run, Catsimatidis Says "Bupkis"

News that state Senator Marty Golden may enter the 2009 mayoral race has drawn what amounts to a drawn-out guffaw from prospective self-funded Republican candidate John Catsimatidis.

“Well I hope he can put up the money and God bless him,” Catsimatidis told me just now.

I asked if he thought Golden could actually win.

“What it’s going to take is real money to win and without real money, you’re just whistling Dixie. How much money did Faso raise? I’ll give you the answer. Nickels and dimes. Right? Which in translation means bupkis.”

He went on:

“What it’s going to take to win is real money. If he’s capable raising $20, $30, $40 million he should enter the race. If he’s not capable of raising that kind of money, then he’s doing his party a disservice. Is that a nice way to say it?”

After hanging up, Catsimatidis called back to add one more thought on the prospect of Golden 2009:

“I’d love to have him as my comptroller, to run for comptroller. The Republican Party needs a good comptroller.”
