La Isla Bonita! We’ve hit that ever-odd point in the season where everything becomes confusing, fashion-wise. Open-toed shoes before Memorial Day? Gauzy, empire-waist slip dresses with or without those dreaded (and ubiquitous) black leggings? And let’s all agree that metallic ballet flats should be banned immediately, before aliens descend and drag the city’s entire female population off to a mall in Parsipanny, NJ. … (Fortunately, we’re only 12 swampy days away from losing a large portion of these fashion disasters to the Hamptonshooray!) Tonight, glowing fiercely under the klieg lights—sans bronzerwill be the lucky folks at People en Español’s party celebrating its “50 Most Beautiful” issue. Expect Latina lovelies such as Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez (more big girls dancing in underwear, please), singer Gloria Trevi, Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz and a bunch of folks from Univision to turn up at Splashlight Studios. A far more sedate affair will be happening not too far away at the Rainbow Room, as the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center doles out its Awards for Excellence (phew!). Getting honored this evening is a doctor (Larry Norton), a businessman (Richard Beattie) and a society swell (Mort Zuckerman). There will be swank cocktails, dinner and a performance by Patti LuPone (“When I saw her as Vera Simpson in Pal Joey, I realized I’d never seen Vera Simpson­—even though I’d seen 27 previous Pal Joey productions!” says our Big-Cheese Editor). Speaking of cheese (and really, when are we not?), the best thing to happen to us in quite a while makes its way to Grand Central Terminal: The world’s largest cheese—made from 6,000 liters of milk, weighing 1,323 pounds and measuring six feet wide—will be on display.
