Joe Bruno responded to Eliot Spitzer’s unflattering slide show with this public statement:

"There was a rare siting [sic] of Governor Spitzer in upstate New York today, but instead of delivering any hope that he might actually deliver on his campaign promises to create jobs upstate and provide more property tax relief, he only delivered more empty political rhetoric."

This back-and-forth continues to be an unusually clear-cut argument by Albany standards, where the issue isn't how to fix a problem but whether one even exists in the first place. Bruno is responding to Spitzer's push for campaign finance reform by saying, essentially, that it's not a real issue.
Here's Bruno's full statement.

"There was a rare siting of Governor Spitzer in upstate New York
today, but instead of delivering any hope that he might actually deliver on
his campaign promises to create jobs upstate and provide more property tax
relief, he only delivered more empty political rhetoric.

The Governor continues to be in self denial. He still thinks that
New Yorkers care more about his millionaire’s re-election campaign finance
plan and the appointment of his campaign contributors to political posts
than they do about property tax relief, the upstate economy and the death
penalty for violent criminals who kill police officers. The Governor is
wrong and no amount of his distortion of facts is going to change the
truth.

The reality is that Governor Spitzer has failed to deliver on his
promises. He has failed to strengthen the upstate economy. While he’s in
Warren County, instead of delivering political attack speeches, he should
be talking to North Country businesses about delivering the help they need
to create more jobs.

The Governor failed to deliver property tax relief for seniors that
he abandoned in his budget. He should be talking to seniors and others who
can no longer afford their family homes in the Adirondacks because of
skyrocketing property taxes.

The Governor failed to get the Assembly to agree to the death penalty
for people that kill police officers or the expansion of the DNA databank,
two issues he campaigned on. Instead of delivering more political
rhetoric, he should be talking to local law enforcement officials who have
seen their colleagues become targets.

It’s unfortunate that Governor Spitzer will not let the facts stand
in the way of reality. Instead of focusing on kids games and political
attacks, he should be dealing with the real issues that matter to New
Yorkers, property taxes, jobs and the economy and public safety. The
Senate has been fighting for these issues and we are ready to come back
whenever the Governor recognizes that these are the people’s priorities,
they were his campaign promises, and he needs to get them done.

Where’s Eliot? Still on the political campaign trail."
