That didn’t take long.
An aide to one of Rudy Giuliani’s presidential rivals called in to take issue with point eight of the Giuliani 12 commitments: "I will increase adoptions, decrease abortions, and protect the quality of life for our children."
The campaign argued that if that pledge is at all based on Giuliani's record in New York, it’s a shaky one. The aide pointed to statistics showing that the number of abortions in New York State decreased at a greater level than in the city while Giuliani was mayor. The aide also cited statistics that give New York City the highest ratio of abortions per every 1,000 live births in the country when Giuliani left office in 2001.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "In 2001, the highest number of reported legal induced abortions occurred in NYC (91,792)." The report also said "The abortion ratios by state or area of occurrence ranged from 36 per 1,000 live births in Idaho to 767 per 1,000 in NYC."
No word back so far from the Giuliani camp.
