The French of Brooklyn let their freak flag fly today with some drunken sand-bowling—called “pétanque,” rhymes with “pee honk”—as they close down Smith Street for a Bastille Day bash and Pétanque Tournament, which will feature sand toted in from Long Island (the most beautiful sand ever) and dumped all over a street used to nothing but Bugaboos. Keep an eye out for New York girls in newsboy caps and no bras at Bar Tabac. Over in Williamsburg, you can submit yourself to a McCarren Park Pool Party (and guess what—the pool does not have water! This is an ironic pool party! Just brilliant!) as the New Orleans roots-music festival Ponderosa Stomp offers performances headlined by Roy Head, Tommy McClain and other jazz and blues legends. Question: Has Manhattan just given up?
