Google is officially expanding its presence in Chelsea.

The Observer has learned that the California-based search engine giant recently closed on 130,000 square feet of space at Chelsea Market at 75 Ninth Avenue – directly across the street from the 360,000 square feet that they already have at 76 Ninth Avenue.

The Observer reported last month that the deal was close to being done, and that it had already expanded their headquarters at 76 Ninth Avenue by 49,000 square feet. Back then, a spokesman for Chelsea Market said, “It is not ownership’s policy to speculate on lease agreements between Chelsea Market and any potential future tenant.”

A source said that it would be "a while" before Google moved into its new home, saying "Google is a very private company when it comes to disseminating information." Floors 2 and 4 are available for rent immediately, according to the web site mrofficespace.com

The source also explained that a special deal had been worked out with Google in terms of rent, but would not disclose the details. However, some perspective was offered as to what it might be paying. The source indicated that an 11,000-square-foot space recently opened up at the same address and the asking rent is $70 per square foot.
