Galloping galas! Henry Buhl, former banker, current photographer and founder of A.C.E. (Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless), has convinced us that no, not all Hamptons galas are the same. Take his, for example! It’s the “Sunflowers Gala,” which this year he hosts with Jane Fonda. “I’ve never met her,” Mr. Buhl said. “But I fell in love with her talking to her on the phone. She’s very sweet. They brought me the tape of Barbarella. She was very young and very naked.” Hello, nurse! The gala is called “Sunflowers,” he explained, because “my house is called Girasole, which is Italian for sunflower. And everything in the house is a sunflower. The rugs are sunflowers, the sheets, the knives, forks, lamps, glasses; the sculptures out in the yard are sunflowers. The pool is all painted with sunflowers … the bathtubs. And we’ve planted 30,000 sunflowers in the yard. At any rate, I’m the sunflower king!” (Easy there, big fella!) Mr. Buhl’s organization, he continued, “takes on homeless men and women living in shelters all over New York City, with the objective of getting them full-time jobs and permanent housing. Ninety-eight percent of our people have been in jail. Thirty-five to forty-five percent are women, and they’re better workers than the men.” Down the road, the lush and lovely Mandy Moore hosts the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge at Bridgehampton, so expect the wannabe wankers and the drunk women who love their money to swarm the big tent today. Not for nothing, we recently saw Argentinian polo star and Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras in the flesh—and let’s just say he is worth the $51 round trip on the Jitney. …
