It’s always tempting to read too much into special election results, if only because there are no other real barometers of public opinion available at the time. (It’s what makes them special!)

But a reader passed along this Washington Post story about Niki Tsongas’ narrow win in a heavily Democratic Congressional district in Massachusetts, where what should have been a no-contest tightened up considerably once her Republican opponent introduced immigration as a campaign issue.

Another indication, perhaps, that the Congressional Democrats elected in conservative or swing districts in New York aren’t crazy to be nervous about what Eliot Spitzer is doing.
