Sheinkopf on the End of a ‘Democratic Surge’

Hank Sheinkopf, a Democratic consultant who previously worked for Eliot Spitzer, thinks that the governor is not to blame for the Democrats' loss in an upstate county executive's race, but that Democrats ought to be worried about the results in a few legislative races in Nassau County .

Here's how he explained it:

“To blame the governor for a 17-point loss in the Erie County Executive’s race is just dumb. Might he have contributed? Yeah, but not 17 points. The tenor of the campaign is what did that. That’s different.”

He added, “The governor doesn’t swing 17 points.”

“What is more telling is that Democrats were not able to pick up seats in Nassau County, which is trending Democratic, and in fact, came within shot of losing one of their incumbents and held even. So what does that tell you? It tells you that the Democratic surge may in fact be over.”
