The top two fund-raisers in Congress right now are Charlie Rangel and Kirsten Gillibrand, according to Congressional Quarterly.

Rangel has generated $2.7 million over the first three quarters of this year, and Gillibrand raised $2 million over the same period. The rest of the list is here.

It's probably safe to assume that the candidates were successful for different reasons.

Rangel has not only been around long enough to compile a lengthy list of steady donors, but is the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which affects taxes and financial policies. Gillibrand's draw, on the other hand, is likely to have as much to do with her vulnerability. She's a freshman Democratic congress member representing a Republican leanding district near Albany, and has successfully appealed for money based on the fact that she's been the target of Republicans since she won her seat last year.
