H. Wiley Hitchcock, New York Musicologist, Editor and Professor, Dies at 84

H. Wiley Hitchcock, eminent musicologist, author, teacher, editor and scholar of American as well as baroque music, died Dec. 5 after a long battle with cancer. He was 84.

Musical America reports:

Among an inordinately impressive list of accomplishments are his founding of the Institute for Studies in American Music at Brooklyn College of the City of New York (1971) and his editing, with Stanley Sadie, of the “New Grove Dictionary of American Music” (1986). He retired from CUNY in 1993 as a Distinguished Professor, but maintained a consulting relationship with ISAM until the end. He was a favorite teacher and encouraging mentor for over four decades.

"Wiley was brilliant," said Bruce C. MacIntyre, director of the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College, "a true man of letters, a model musicologist with multifaceted interests, impeccable standards, and path-breaking publications."
