Helen Mirren has been cornered into queenly roles during her entire career, playing three in the past decade (Queen Charlotte in 1994’s The Madness of King George, Queen Elizabeth I in 2005’s Elizabeth I and of course the Buckingham Palace monarch in last year’s The Queen). But now the 64-year-old dame is about to get a little spunky in her glory years. She’s about to appear opposite Nicholas Cage in the adventure romp National Treasure: Book of Secrets, set for release on Dec. 21. “I can’t go on being royal, can I? Have to have a little sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll in my acting life!” Ms. Mirren told Variety‘s Liz Smith.
Soon she will travel to New Mexico to join husband Taylor Hackford who’ll direct her in “Love Ranch.” She will play a madam. … She also presented me with her new book, “In the Frame: My Life in Words and Pictures.” This is already a smash hit in Great Britain and Simon & Schuster will bring it out in March. Crammed with photos and candid opinions, it is an unusual work of art.
