With her campaign in instant-response mode against implications from Barack Obama that she has sought to diminish the accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr., Hillary Clinton spoke at an event honoring the civil rights leader today and said, “We need to be recommitted to Dr. King’s dream.”
Appearing on a stage in front of black union leaders and elected officials at a SEIU Local 32BJ event honoring Dr. King at the Manhattan Center, Clinton was met with a smattering of boos when she came to the podium, but won applause throughout her speech.
“Each of us,” she said “is a beneficiary of Dr. King.”
“How many of us would have dreamed to ever see the day when a woman and an African American would be running for the presidency of the United States of America?”
She added, quoting Frederick Douglas, “Right is of no sex and truth is of no color.”
And “Both Senator Obama and I know that we are where we are today because of leaders like Dr. King.”
