Spiegel & Grau has hired Tina Pohlman from Harcourt and named her senior editor for hardcovers and editorial director for paperbacks, it was announced today. At Harcourt, which is in the middle of a messy merger with Houghton Mifflin that has left several high-level people without jobs, Ms. Pohlman was editorial director the paperback imprint Harvest Books.
Spiegel & Grau is a division of Random House’s Doubleday group that was started about two and a half years ago by ex-Riverhead publishers Cindy Spiegel and Julie Grau (read all about it in this week’s Observer). They have published two books so far but acquired more than fifty; their debut list, which includes Lee Siegel’s Against the Machine, Adam Langer’s Ellington Boulevard, and Steve Toltz’s A Fraction of the Whole, will launch soon.
Ms. Pohlman is Spiegel & Grau’s first hire since last February, when they brought on Chris Jackson from Crown and Michael Mezzo from Little, Brown.
