Only in New Jersey: Indicted ex-official working as poll worker

Jonathan Soto, a former Republican Councilman from Passaic who was indicted last week on bribery charges by a federal grand jury, is employed – at least for today – by the Passaic County Board of Elections. He is working as a paid poll worker in West Paterson.

Poll workers are hired by the Board of Elections – where Soto’s brother is a Commissioner – and his appointment was approved by Assemblyman Scott Rumana, the Passaic County GOP Chairman.

“Here we have a person that is under indictment for public corruption and GOP Chairman Ernie Sesso and the West Paterson Republicans sign off on him working the polls in West Paterson, it’s just not right,” said Joseph Spinelli, a West Paterson Councilman.

“Why didn’t they assign him to work the polls in Passaic City? Would that have sent up some red flags? So instead he gets slipped into West Paterson. Are the local Republicans watching who they have working the polls representing their party? Are they looking to protect the integrity of the election process? I guess not,” said Councilman Keith Kazmark.
