Romenesko has a memo from the Guild that says the deadline to apply for a Times buyout has been extended from yesterday to March 7. That’s because other than a few high-profile volunteers–Linda Greenhouse, David Cay Johnston–there haven’t been nearly enough applicants.
Even filing for a buyout–described by one as "raising your hand in writing"– isn’t totally committal. If someone applies, the staffer still has the option to back out of the buyout over the next 45 days, according to two Times staffers. The Guild in its memo also repeats what Bill Keller warned on the day he announced the job cuts–if there aren’t enough buyouts, then layoffs are next (with the longest-serving members of the newsroom up first).
Deadline is at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
