Clinton References Kennedy Assassination, Obama Campaign Pounces

In an editorial board discussion this afternoon with the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Hillary Clinton mentioned Bobby Kennedy’s mid-June assassination as a reminder that past primaries have carried on well into summer, and promptly got Drudged.

Her comment: “My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it.”

The Boston Globe has a semi-sensational “appears to raise the specter” lead.

The Times plays it as something more routine, which Clinton almost certainly intended it to be.

The Obama campaign is not going with the charitable interpretation, apparently. Spokesman Bill Burton issued a statement saying that Clinton’s comments were “unfortunate” and have “no place in this campaign.”
