Neo-carnival Spiegelworld will set up shop at the South Street Seaport for the third time, holding a twelve-week series of concerts and parties, along with original circus and burlesque productions. The annual happening, which will mostly take place under a pair of vintage, hand-sewn tents, will be on Pier 17 beginning on August 10—opening night will feature queer culture king Justin Bond and cabaret performer Meow Meow in a performance dubbed “Heavy Petting,” to give you an idea of the Spiegelworld brand—and will run through early November.
This summer’s musical lineup—about fifty bands deep—features everything from a musical tribute to Abbie Hoffman on August 24 (with jam banders Steve Molitz, Jon Gutwillig, Michael Travis and Jason Hann) to fey pop duo The Bird & The Bee on September 30 to songwriter/activist/comedian Nellie McKay on October 14 and indie superstars Deerhoof on October 21. In addition to the concerts, Spiegelworld will be hosting weekly dance parties Wednesday-Sunday, with a range of music that includes salsa, soul, and an impressive array of international and local DJs. There will also be nightly performances of Spiegelworld’s signature cabaret show Absinthe and the new “theatrical circus experience” Desir (directed and choreographed by the people responsible for 2001’s Moulin Rouge). Also, they’re setting up a beer garden which is, thankfuly, open to the public.
