Chris Smith reunites family separated by Russian/Georgian conflict

The Associated Press reports that U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-Hamilton) has succeeded in securing the passage of two Monmouth County children from a war zone in the Republic of Georgia to the U.S. Embassy in the capital.

Ashley and Sophia Evans, ages seven and three, had been trapped at their grandparents’ farm after Russian troops invaded parts of the nation two weeks ago.

Smith flew to Georgia earlier this week to coordinate their return. He enlisted French Ambassador Eric Fournier to pick them up and escort them on the six hour journey back to Tbilisi.

“We’re all on clouds over here,” Smith told the wire service.

The girls, who were reunited with their father at the embassy, expect to return to New Jersey within a few days.
