We’ve all heard the clichéd advice on how to end a relationship: “Do it in a public place,” goes the recommendation of the squeamish (and possibly sadistic). That way you’ll avoid a big scene with tears and screaming recriminations — and the possibility that the dumpee will literally cut his or her heart out and serve it to you on a plate. Huh?
The funny/sad video for Gnarls Barkley’s “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” begins with an all-too-familiar scene — a young couple is about to uncouple in a crowded diner. Soon the focus shifts, and firstwe’re in what seems like an extremely deadpan horror movie, as the crushed young man “gifts” his now former girlfriend with his beating heart . . . then the horror movie becomes a goofy animation, and the bloody heart proceeds to sing and work the room. We could watch this many, many times. Does that make us craaaaaazy? Possibly.
