Baby on Board! ‘I Was Very Horny During Pregnancy,’ Says Ricki Lake

ricki lake Baby on Board! I Was Very Horny During Pregnancy, Says Ricki LakeTuesday evening, Ricki Lake co-hosted a birthing center benefit at Babeland—"sex toys for a passionate world"—to support The New Space for Women’s Health. (Last year, Ms. Lake produced a documentary, The Business of Being Born, about the American healthcare system’s treatment of pregnant women and how midwives are a better alternative than hospitals for delivering babies.)

"Is this stuff on sale? Can you just like buy this stuff right now? I need to go shopping!" Ms. Lake said of Babeland’s sex-toy array. She walked in excited, wearing a fitted black tube dress and large diamond ring. Overheard as she entered: "Oh. She looks so great!" "She’s so thin!" "She’s so pretty!" "I love her! I just love her!" "When you work for John Waters that long, you have to be cool."

We asked Ms. Lake about The New Space.

"I don’t even live here anymore, I live in L.A., but I think it’s shocking that we don’t have a free standing birth center in one of the greatest cities in the world—that and Prop. 8, in the age of Obama?" She looked at us side-long, as if we had knocked over a dildo. "I’m not even gay! But I was embraced by the gay community my entire career. My new career doesn’t pay any money, but I’m an activist!"

She smiled again and started in on her midwife-cause more generally: "I mean, I didn’t do it to get a pat on the back, [pregnant women] need a voice. They need an outlet!

"At 40 I think I finally found it," she said of her passion. "Plus I get to take home a vibrator. Life is good."

We mingled among clusters of pregnant women perusing sex-scented-candles and found Michelle Hurd from Law and Order S.V.U.

Did she have any items for home-use in mind, we wondered?

"The Sassy. I feel like it’s the gift that will always give." She held her heart sarcastically and looked at us. (The Sassy vibrator sets user preferences, so it seems to "remember" what you like.)

She was accompanied by a shorter, suited man who went over to the DVD rack and brought back Deep Throat. "Ahh yes, Deep Throat," she said, massaging its cover. "It stands the test of time."

She told us that she bought her mom the Rabbit for Christmas last year, and this year it’ll probably be the Sassy for both her mom and her sister.

"I don’t see a problem with it—they’ll be in different rooms!"

We caught up with Ms. Lake one more time before she left for the evening, and asked about the juxtaposition of Babeland and a birthing center. We are advocating for pregnant woman masturbation, correct?

She made a face.

"Are you asking me if I masturbated during my pregnancy?"

Sure!

"I don’t remember," she swatted the air with her hand. "I do remember I was very horny."
