Is Britney Spears Finally Playing for Keeps?

Slowly but surely, wayward popstar Britney Spears seems to be reclaiming–or perhaps establishing–some dignity.

Last night, Ms. Spears appeared onstage at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles with Madonna, walking out in a fitted tuxedo shirt and a pair of not unreasonable, shiny wide-leg trousers to sing the last verse of “Human Nature.” Though she was not joined by ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake (he sang later in the performance), Ms. Spears was treated to a hand-kiss from Madonna, who also took it upon herself to tell the audience, “She’s not your bitch!”

Point taken! And it looks as though that message has also been relayed to mother/frenemy Lynn Spears, whose book, Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World, isn’t doing so well by massive celebrity tell-all standards. (Of course, it did debut at No. 5 on the New York Times bestseller list with sales of 19,000, so failure is definitely relative.)

Ms. Spears also struck back more directly at another kind of parasite, posting a video–labeled “This week’s PapaRAZZIE for Special Achievements in Walking Backwards”–on her website of an over-eager paparazzo slipping and falling to the ground while pursuing her.
