De Blasio Defends Billboard Owners

At a rally on the City Hall steps this morning, Bill de Blasio said the city buildings department is unfairly levying expensive fines to billboard owners for relatively harmless infractions, while more serious violations at construction sites often get hit with less expensive fines–providing little incentive to improve safety.

De Blasio, who represents parts of brownstown Brooklyn and is running for public advocate this year, said aggressive fines for billboard owners is similar to the increased number of parking tickets issued by the police department.

“Once again, we see a pattern: the Buildings Department finding every opportunity to grab all the revenue possible,” de Blasio said.

De Blasio said he wants the agency to lower their fines and reform billboard regulations.
