Christine Quinn just led a rally on the City Hall steps urging the state legislature to repeal the vacancy decontrol law and give New York City the power to determine its own rent control laws.
At the event, I asked Quinn how problematic it was that Michael Bloomberg has already expressed opposition to repealing the rule that gives Albany legislators control of the city’s rent laws.
“I don’t believe at all it is problematic for the City Council to request this right. We have been on record for many years saying that fair is fair. And what is fair is for the City of New York and its legislative body, the City Council, to have power over laws that affect the lives of our tenants,” she said.
When asked by another reporter if Bloomberg’s opposition to this will impact his re-election, Quinn said, “I’m not sure what the mayor’s position is on vacancy decontrol” and referred the question to the mayor’s campaign.
