ALBANY—Here’s an unusual sight: State Senator George Maziarz standing in front a squadron of his Democratic colleagues at a press conference Maziarz crashed to blast the New York Power Authority for raising rates for bulk power in Niagara and St. Lawrence counties and approving employee bonuses.
“All of us are united around the idea that there should not be bonuses or rate increases,” said State Senator Kevin Parker. He said Maziarz wasn’t invited to the press conference – the state senate’s weekly briefing of its affairs – due to an “oversight on my part.”
Maziarz was in agreement with his colleagues about the end goal of dealing with NYPA, but said that a sweep of authority funds (which the Democrats passed) caused the rate increases. As Parker denied this, Maziarz shook his head behind him.
Maziarz denied that his presence said anything about his broader partisan loyalties.
He started off lurking in the back of the room before State Senator David Valesky invited him to the front of the room. The Democrats said his presence was a sign of bipartisanship.
“We’ve got dogs and cats living together, and Yankees and Red Sox playing together,” conference spokesman Austin Shafran said, before getting grilled about Hiram Monserrate.
