We don’t normally recommend movies after their release, but we enjoyed Adventureland so much, we didn’t want you to miss it: This quiet and charming film may be the best thing playing in theaters right now.
Set in the late 1980s and directed by Superbad’s Greg Mottola, Adventureland is a coming-of-age story centered on a recent college graduate (Jesse Eisenberg) who finds employment (and love) at a rickety amusement park. A group of terrifically kooky character actors — Kristin Stewart, Martin Starr, Bill Hader, Kristen Wigg, and Ryan Reynolds — rounds out the cast, and the ridiculously great soundtrack includes songs by David Bowie, the Velvet Underground, Yo La Tengo, the Modern Lovers, and Lou Reed. For a simple nostalgia flick, it’s refreshingly uncynical and affecting.
