Here’s Michael Bloomberg asking people to sign up to his campaign page on Facebook, and welcoming his 15,000th Facebook supporter. So far, he has 15,063 of them.
Bill Thompson, by contrast, has 4,622 friends on his personal Facebook page, which he effectively uses as his campaign page.
The number of supporters Bloomberg has on Facebook, theoretically, offers his campaign some tangible evidence of the mayor’s popularity. Or, at least, of the effectiveness of his paid ads and other unparalleled early expenditures. (I’m sure there’s some clever dollars-per-Facebook-supporter figure waiting to be calculated, but I’m not sure I have the wherewithal.)
