Former NJ Assistant U.S. Attorney arrested — again

Just two weeks after pleading guilty to helping run a Manhattan prostitution ring, defense attorney Paul Bergrin, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for New Jersey and lawyer in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, was arrested today on 14 federal counts that includes racketeering and murder of a drug case witness.

Bergrin, a 53-year-old Marlboro resident, was allegedly involved in the murder of a confidential witness for an Essex County drug case, and also allegedly tried to hire a hitman from Chicago to murder “at least one” witness in a Monmouth County drug case. The Monmouth County murder never occurred, however, because that hitman turned out to be a coorperating witness.

Bergrin and three co-defendents are expected to appear in federal court at 2:30 this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo.
