Ms. Lively's Backless Cavalli Dress at Opening of Swarovski Crystallized Store on June 25, 2009 Is Good

This week, the Transom wrote about celebrities ditching personal stylists and instead going directly to fashion houses to select dresses for various events. Sometimes this can be great, as in the case of actress Chloë Sevigny, who has been dressing herself for years and doing so mighty well. Other times, as stylist Phillip Bloch pointed out, it can be a bad idea since designers, eager to get their gown on the red carpet, will be the last to tell you that a dress doesn't totally look right.

Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively, who says she does not employ a stylist,  is a prime example of this. Sometimes, her self-selected outfits are beautiful. Other times, they're complete failures.

Click through for the best and worst of Ms. Lively's self-styled looks.
