Bloomberg Campaign: Us and Everyone Else, Too

Yesterday, Bill Thompson’s campaign blasted Michael Bloomberg for not reporting $3.3 million in personal contributions he made to political entities, saying the mayor was trying to skirt the city’s campaign finance laws.

The criticism was undermined somewhat by the fact that most, if not all, of the contributions at concern had been reported. Bloomberg's people also noted that Thompson did the same thing, but for a total of $6,000. Thompson’s people responded that not reporting $6,000 is not the same as not reporting $3.3 million. Size matters, they said, and Bloomberg's behavior represented a “pattern."

For what it's worth, it appears that the pattern isn’t just Bloomberg’s. Each of the major Democratic candidates running for citywide office have made personal contributions that were not listed as expenses by their respective campaign committees, according to a list put together by Bloomberg’s campaign.

“This list makes clear what a farce Mr. Thompson's event was yesterday. Every Democrat running for citywide office—including him—has followed the same reporting requirements that Mike Bloomberg has,” said Howard Wolfson.

The list was created by looking up campaign finance filings from candidates who received contributions from elected officials, and cross-referencing them with each contributor’s campaign committee to see if it was listed as an expenditure.

Here's the document:
