The Week in Interviews: Former Star Magazine Reporter Dishes on Making Out With Jon Gosselin While on Assignment

The Best of the Best from TV news interviews, August 14 to August 21:

On Nightline, Frank Bruni told ABC’s John Berman about his pet peeves as a food critic. “I hate that common phrase in a restaurant, you know, are you done working on that?” said Mr. Bruni. “As if you’re chiseling away at a sculpted piece of marble.”

NBC’s Matt Lauer interviewed fallen reality-star Richard Hatch, who was under house arrest in Rhode Island. “As the gay man who liked to get naked, how does that go over when you’re sent to a prison and you’re locked up with 50 guys?” asked Mr. Lauer. “It didn’t change, if that’s what you’re asking,” said Mr. Hatch. “I was treated fine. I was never assaulted.”

Afterwards, Mr. Hatch was sent back to jail for granting the interview without approval from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

On HBO’s Real Sports, Bernard Goldberg interviewed former University of South Florida football player Nick Schuyler, about the tragic fishing trip gone awry on the Gulf of Mexico, which took the lives of three of his friends.

Elsewhere, during an appearance on The O’Reilly Factor, Mr. Goldberg told Bill O’Reilly that he was “against people who bring guns to town-hall meetings” and “against comparing Barack Obama to Hitler.” Mr. Goldberg and Mr. O’Reilly went on to criticize David Gregory of NBC News.

And former Star magazine reporter Kate Major talked to CBS’s Maggie Rodriguez about making out with Jon Gosselin while on assignment. “I went there with the intention of coming back with a story,” said Ms. Major. “And unfortunately I fell for Jon, and came back with Jon.”

Ms. Rodriguez asked if she still has “journalistic aspirations.” “Of course,” said Ms. Major. “I loved my job. … I have a degree. I’m not some stupid girl. This wasn’t my first assignment.”
