And It Was All Downhill From There

I guess David Paterson wasn’t kidding when he lamented his rise to governor. “I did not sign up for this,” was quite the understatement, according to some quotes from his wife, Michelle, in Cindy Adams’ column this morning.

“When this happened with Spitzer and the job suddenly fell to David, the first words out of his mouth were: ‘I think I’ll kill myself,’ and I said to him: ‘So then who would be governor?'”

At least she’s got a sense of humor about it.

She also says news of the White House asking him not to run came from a reporter.

“I was with a friend fund-raising in Seattle for David when he called and told me the White House wanted him to get out of the race. He’d gotten it from a reporter. One way would have been to ask him. This way was disrespectful. He’s not going to be disrespected.”

For all their bursts of personal candor, the Patersons sure are cagey about this White House story.
