At a Decisive Moment for Times Digital, the Chief Takes a Culture Job

picture 25 At a Decisive Moment for Times Digital, the Chief Takes a Culture JobTimes digital guy Jon Landman is going to take over for Sam Sifton as culture editor; Mr. Sifton, you may recall, left that post to take over for Frank Bruni as restaurant reviewer.

It’s a big, big move, as the Times finalizes its business strategy for the digital side (paywall or no paywall?).

John Koblin has the memo from Times executive editor Bill Keller here; an excerpt below will no doubt feed speculation among what Mr. Keller called “Times-obsessed kibbitzers” about how this all shook out:

In proposing this change, Jon made a strong case that, in the next stage of integration, the support and promotion of this new kind of journalism must become more fully the responsibility of the newsroom’s top leadership — me, Jill and John.

OK! Stay tuned for more; this kibbitz won’t end so easily.
