The endless introductions of local elected officials that precede every major political speech—while pointless and boring to most people in the audience—are a source of ego validation for the politicians being introduced.
So when you’re the president and the politicians you’re introducing are members of Congress—whose actions will determine whether your presidency lives or dies—it’s probably a good idea not to give them the impression you don’t know their names.
Just a few minutes ago, Barack Obama glanced down at his notes and announced at a health care rally at the University of Maryland that “Congressman Butch Ruppersberger is here!”
That would be Congressman DUTCH Ruppersberger, a fourth-term Democrat from Baltimore County. It’s obviously not a huge deal, although you can imagine the grief Butch … er, Dutch will be getting from his friends in the days ahead.
